Poppy and the Blue Sock
Poppy was a small brown puppy. She had one floppy ear. She had one ear that stood up.
Poppy loved her blue sock. It was not for a foot. It was her soft toy.
She took it to the rug. She took it to the door. At night, she took it to her basket.
But tonight, the sock was not there.
Poppy looked in her basket.
No sock.
She looked by her bowl.
No sock.
She looked under the chair. There was a ball, but no sock.
"I need some help," she said.
Milo the cat came over. "I can look down low."
Poppy's grown-up, Lee, came too. "I can look up high."
Milo peeped under the rug. Lee looked on the shelf. Poppy sniffed beside the door.
Then she saw a bit of blue.
It was in the toy cart. A small toy bunny lay on top of it.
"There it is!" said Poppy.
She lifted Bunny with her nose. Bunny had been using the sock as a bed.
Poppy paused.
"Bunny needs a soft bed too."
Lee found a clean little cloth. It was yellow and soft. Milo helped push it into the cart.
Poppy set Bunny on the cloth. She tucked one corner close.
"Good night, Bunny."
Now Poppy had her sock. She carried it all the way to her basket. Her paws made tiny taps on the floor.
Lee set a cup down. Milo curled up on a chair. The house began to feel still.
Poppy turned once in her basket. Then she turned once more. She lay down with the blue sock under her chin.
One ear flopped. One ear stood up. Soon that ear grew soft too.
Lee stroked her warm back. Poppy let out a long, happy sigh. Her toy was near. Her friends were near. It was time to sleep.
