A Kitten Bedtime Story for 4-Year-Olds
Read this cozy kitten tale with your child as the house grows still. You can notice the little patches of light together.
Clover and the Moon Patch
Clover the kitten loved the sunny patch on the kitchen floor. Every afternoon, she stretched her paws inside it and warmed her soft gray tummy.
But one evening, the sunny patch was gone.
Clover looked behind the bread basket. She looked under the table. She even looked inside an empty box.
"Where did my warm spot go?" she asked.
Her friend Moss, a sleepy old dog, opened one eye.
"The sun has gone to bed on our side of the world," he said.
Clover sat down. "Then where shall I rest?"
Moss moved his paws to make room on his blanket. Clover tried one corner. It was soft, but she could hear the kitchen tap dripping nearby.
"You can choose another spot," Moss told her.
Clover padded into the sitting room. A pale square lay across the rug. It looked almost like her sunny patch.
She stepped into it.
"I found the sun!"
Moss followed slowly. "That is moonlight. Look at the window."
Beyond the glass, the moon shone over the garden. Clover watched it for a while. Then she curled inside the pale square.
It was pretty, but it was not warm.
"Perhaps moonlight is for looking at," she said.
"And blankets are for keeping cozy," Moss replied.
Together, they carried a small cushion to the window seat. Moss brought one end in his mouth. Clover pushed the other with her head.
Their grown-up added a soft blanket. Clover kneaded it gently with her little paws. This spot had moonlight, a warm cover, and no dripping tap.
"Just right," she whispered.
Moss settled on the rug below. Clover could hear his steady breathing. Outside, the leaves moved slowly, making soft shadows on the wall.
The moon patch would travel as the night went on. Clover did not need to follow it. Her cushion would stay beneath her, and her blanket would keep her warm.
She folded her tail close, rested her chin, and fell quietly asleep.
