    The Moss Keeper’s Bench

At the edge of a quiet wood lived a small moss keeper named Willa. She wore a soft green coat and cared for a bench beneath a broad oak tree.

The bench was a place where anyone could sit. Nobody had to bring a story. Nobody had to smile.

One evening, a young rabbit named Fen came along the path. His paws moved quickly, then slowly, then quickly again.

"I have many thoughts tonight," he said.

Willa moved her basket to make room. "You may sit beside me."

Fen sat. The bench was steady beneath him. His feet touched the soft ground.

For a little while, they listened to the leaves. Some rustled high above them. Others rested quietly on the path.

"Do I have to make my thoughts go away?" Fen asked.

"No," said Willa. "We can let them be here while we sit."

She poured a little water into a cup. Fen held it between his paws. The cup felt smooth. The water tasted cool.

A moth drifted toward the oak and settled on the bark.

Fen watched it fold its wings.

Willa breathed in gently. Then she let her breath out, slowly and comfortably. Fen tried one breath like hers. Then he breathed in his own easy way.

    There was no hurry.

The sky changed from pale blue to soft gray. Willa placed a blanket across their knees.

"My thoughts are still here," Fen said. "But they feel a little farther apart."

"We can keep sitting," Willa replied.

When Fen was ready, his grown-up came to walk home with him. Willa gave him a small square of soft cloth to carry in his pocket.

At home, Fen felt the cloth between his paws while his grown-up tucked him in. The room was familiar. The blanket was gentle. Someone he loved sat nearby.

There was nothing he needed to finish now. A thought could come, and a thought could pass. His bed would still hold him.

Fen rested his cheek on the pillow. The night moved slowly around the house, and little by little, he drifted into sleep.
