Short Bedtime Story for Toddlers

Settle in with your toddler for one small walk home. You can keep your voice soft and pause for a cuddle whenever you like.

Bun Takes the Long Way Home

Bun was a small bunny. He had soft ears. He had a red bag.

One day, Bun went for a walk with Papa.

In the bag was a pear. The pear was for a snack.

They went past a big tree. They went past a low wall. Then they sat on a flat rock.

Papa cut the pear. Bun had one bit. Papa had one bit.

    A small duck came by.

    "Hello," said Bun.

"Hello," said Duck. "I am going home."

    "We are too," said Papa.

But Bun did not want to go yet. He liked the big tree. He liked the low wall. He liked the sky.

"Can we go the long way?" he asked.

"We can go slowly," Papa said.

    So they did.

They saw a leaf turn in the air. Bun held out a paw. The leaf fell by his foot.

They saw a snail on a stone. They did not touch it. They gave it room.

They saw one white flower. Bun bent down to smell it.

Then Bun gave a big yawn.

"My feet feel slow," he said.

Papa held his paw. "Home is close."

They went through the gate. They went up the path. Bun could see his little bed through the door.

Papa helped him wash. Bun put on his soft night shirt. He set the red bag on a peg.

The walk was done. His bag was empty. His home was warm.

Bun climbed into bed. Papa tucked the quilt around him.

"We saw a lot," Bun said.

    "And now we can rest."

Bun lay still. His ears felt warm. His paws felt soft. Papa sat near and hummed a low tune.

Outside, the leaf lay on the path. The snail rested on its stone. Inside, Bun closed his eyes and went to sleep.
