Bea’s Special Place
Princess Bea's castle had a new sound. Sometimes it was a squeak. Sometimes it was a sigh. Sometimes it was her baby brother asking for milk in the only way he knew.
Bea liked his tiny fingers. She liked his soft socks. But she did not always like waiting.
One evening, Mama was feeding the baby when Bea brought a book.
"Story time?" Bea asked.
"In a little while," Mama said gently.
Bea sat on the rug. A little while felt long.
Papa came and sat beside her. "Would you like company?"
Bea leaned against his arm. "The baby needs so much."
"He does," Papa said. "And you need things too. You can tell us."
Bea thought carefully. She did not need tiny socks or milk in a bottle.
"I need our window seat," she said. "And a story with Mama."
Papa nodded. "Let us make a plan."
When the baby finished feeding, Papa held him in a soft blanket. Mama went with Bea to the window seat.
Bea brought her book. Mama brought two cushions. They sat close, just as they had before the baby came.
"Sometimes I like being a big sister," Bea said. "Sometimes I want to be little too."
Mama kissed her hair. "You can be both. You are still my child."
They read about a bird building a nest. Bea turned every page. Nobody rushed her.
Afterward, Bea chose a cloth star from her toy basket. She showed it to the baby while Papa held him.
"You can look," she told him. "I am keeping it for now."
His little hand opened and closed.
At bedtime, Mama tucked Bea in while Papa cared for the baby nearby. Bea could hear a low hum through the door.
The castle had new sounds and new routines. But her pillow was the same, her story had been read, and Mama's hand was warm around hers.
Bea let her eyes close, knowing there would be room for her tomorrow too.
