    The Table Under the Maple

Maple Mouse set a long cloth beneath the maple tree. Today, her woodland neighbors were sharing a Thanksgiving meal.

Rabbit brought carrots. Bear brought warm bread. Fox brought apples in a basket with a red handle.

Maple had made a pot of pumpkin soup. It smelled sweet and warm.

But when she looked at the table, she frowned. Every bowl was a different size. Every cup was a different color. One spoon had a very short handle.

"It does not match," she told Bear.

Bear looked carefully. "My bowl is big because my paws are big. Your bowl is small because your paws are small."

Rabbit lifted the short spoon. "And this one is just right for me."

Maple smiled a little. Perhaps different things could belong together.

Then a quiet hedgehog named Hazel arrived. She carried nothing at all.

"My apple cakes did not turn out," Hazel said. "I hope I can still come."

Maple moved a chair beside her own.

    "We saved you a place."

Hazel helped pass the napkins. She listened while Fox told a funny story about a basket that rolled down a hill. Soon everyone was laughing, even Maple.

Before they ate, each friend named something they were thankful for.

"Rain for the garden," said Rabbit.

    "A dry roof," said Fox.

"Friends who make room," Hazel said softly.

Maple looked at the bowls again. Blue, brown, green, and yellow. Each one held warm soup. Each one belonged to someone she loved having near.

"I am thankful you are here," she said.

After supper, everyone helped tidy up. Hazel folded the cloth. Bear carried the pot. Nothing had to be done alone.

That night, Maple climbed into her little bed beneath the tree roots. Her house smelled faintly of pumpkin and warm bread.

She pictured the colorful table and all the different paws around it. Her own paws relaxed beneath the quilt. The meal was over, the washing was done, and her grateful heart settled quietly into sleep.
