The Little Winter Window
On Christmas Eve, a winter fairy named Lumi watched the village from a window ledge. Inside the house, a child named Rosa was making paper stars with her grandfather.
Some stars had six points. Some had seven. One looked more like a cheerful potato.
"That one is mine," Grandfather said proudly.
Rosa laughed, then looked toward the house across the lane. Its window was dark.
"Our new neighbor has not put up any lights."
Lumi fluttered in through the open kitchen window. "Perhaps we could ask whether they would like a paper star."
Grandfather put on his coat and walked across with Rosa. Their neighbor, Mr. Chen, opened the door with a sleepy smile.
"I have been unpacking all day," he said. "I lost track of the evening."
Rosa held up two stars. "Would you like one for your window?"
"I would like the cheerful potato," Mr. Chen said.
They all laughed. He explained that his family did not celebrate Christmas, but he enjoyed seeing the village windows shine.
"You are welcome to join us for a warm drink," Grandfather offered. "No special celebration required."
Mr. Chen brought a little tin of biscuits. At Rosa's house, they sat around the kitchen table while Lumi warmed her tiny hands near a mug.
They talked about moving house, favorite winter foods, and the best place to watch birds in spring. Nobody needed to have the same traditions to enjoy sitting together.
Before leaving, Mr. Chen helped Rosa hang the last star. Then he carried his own across the lane.
Soon the cheerful potato glowed in his window, lit by a small lamp behind it.
Rosa brushed her teeth and climbed into bed. Grandfather tucked her blanket around her shoulders.
Outside, Lumi rested beneath the shelter of the window frame. Two houses shone softly across the quiet lane.
Rosa did not stay awake to watch for anything more. The evening had already held enough warmth. She turned her cheek toward her pillow and slept beneath the gentle paper stars.
