    The Moon Garden Map

Astronaut Noor lived on a small moon station with her family. Through her bedroom window, Earth looked like a blue marble wrapped in white ribbons.

Every evening, Noor helped tend the station garden. Peas climbed silver strings. Lettuce grew in neat trays. A little fan made a sound like a very distant sea.

Tonight, a new visitor named Eli wanted to see the garden. But all the station doors looked the same to him.

"I keep finding the cupboard," he said. "The towels are lovely, but they are not tomatoes."

Noor smiled. "Let's make a map."

She fetched a sheet of paper and three crayons. At first, she drew every hallway, cupboard, and pipe. Soon the paper was so crowded that even Noor could not follow it.

    She put down her crayon.

"Perhaps a helpful map does not need every little thing."

Eli nodded. "I know the window with the blue Earth."

They began there. Noor drew a round window. Next came the kitchen, marked with a spoon. Last came the garden, marked with a leaf.

Together they followed the pictures. Window, spoon, leaf. At the final door, the air smelled fresh and green.

    "I found it," Eli whispered.

He watered the lettuce while Noor checked the peas. One tiny white flower had opened since yesterday. They sat beside it for a moment, admiring how something so small could grow so far from home.

Before leaving, they pinned their map at the hallway corner. Another visitor stopped to look and smiled with relief.

Back in her room, Noor climbed into bed. Her parent pulled the blanket gently over her shoulders.

Outside, Earth turned slowly in the velvet dark. Inside, the garden fan hummed beyond the wall.

Noor pictured the little flower resting beneath its growing lamp. It had water, warmth, and room to grow. She had her family, her blanket, and a whole quiet night.

With nothing more to find, she drifted softly into sleep.
