Tiko Learns to Pause
Tiko was the newest robot on the starship Juniper. He had round wheels, two careful hands, and a little screen that showed a sun when he was pleased.
Each morning, he made a list of useful things to do. He sorted seed packets, polished windows, and delivered socks that had wandered into the laundry baskets.
One evening, his list was finished. Every box had a neat blue check.
Tiko rolled to Captain Imani. "What should I do now?"
"You could join our quiet hour," she said.
Tiko looked at the observation room. People were sitting in cushions, watching a pale planet turn below them.
"But nobody is doing anything."
"We are noticing," said Imani.
Tiko tried. He counted the cushions. He measured the window. He began making a list of things that needed no cleaning.
His screen showed a puzzled circle.
A child named Jules patted the space beside their cushion. "You don't have to make a list. You can just look with me."
Tiko parked beside them. At first, the planet seemed plain and white. Then he noticed a cream-colored swirl. A silver edge. A shadow that curved like the side of a bowl.
"It is changing very slowly," he said.
"We have time," Jules replied.
For several minutes, they watched without counting anything. The room hummed gently. Someone adjusted a blanket. Tiko's hands rested loosely in his lap.
When quiet hour ended, he discovered that he felt pleasantly settled. His screen displayed a small, soft moon.
"Was that useful?" he asked.
Imani smiled. "Rest does not have to earn its place on a list."
At his charging nook, Tiko set tomorrow's seed packets aside. They would be ready in the morning. Tonight, there was nothing left he needed to finish.
He dimmed his screen and pictured the slow planet turning beyond the window. The starship hummed around him like a gentle lullaby.
Tiko entered his resting mode, with his hands open and his little moon glowing low.
