    Mira and the Shell Song

Mira the mermaid kept a collection of empty shells on a shelf outside her home. Some were pink, some were cream, and one had a stripe like a tiny ribbon.

Each evening, her friend Bo the crab tapped them gently with a piece of sea grass. The shells made soft little sounds.

Tonight, Bo wanted to play a special song for his grandmother. He tapped the pink shell, then the striped one. But the sounds came too quickly, and his claws got tangled in the grass.

"It does not sound like my song," he said.

Mira sat beside him on the sand. "What would you like your song to feel like?"

    Bo thought for a while.

"Like sitting next to someone who is glad you came."

"Then perhaps it can take its time," Mira said.

They listened to the water moving through the reeds. A silver fish passed slowly overhead. Somewhere beyond the reef, a bubble rose with a tiny pop.

Bo tried again. One tap. A pause. Another tap.

Mira hummed a soft note between the sounds. This time, Bo's claws stayed calm.

Grandmother Crab arrived carrying a little basket of seaweed biscuits. She settled on a smooth stone and folded her claws.

"We made something for you," Bo told her.

He played his small song. Mira hummed beside him. When one tap came out crooked, Bo simply waited and began the next note.

His grandmother smiled all the way through.

"That sounded like a lovely place to rest," she said.

They shared the biscuits while the reef grew dim and blue. Mira returned the shells to their shelf, leaving room between each one.

At home, she curled into her sea-grass bed. Her mother drew a soft woven cover over her tail.

Mira listened once more to the hush of moving water. She did not need another song. The reef was already singing, slowly and softly, and she could rest inside its gentle sound.
