Bedtime Story About Starting School

The Door with the Blue Star

On the morning before school began, Kit visited the classroom with Dad. A blue paper star hung on the door.

The school had a little magic. Paintbrushes washed themselves, and the story rug warmed gently when someone sat down. But Kit was thinking about ordinary things.

"What if I do not know where to put my bag?" they asked.

"We can find out," Dad said.

Inside, Teacher Jo knelt to say hello. She showed Kit a row of hooks. Each hook had a picture and a name.

Kit found a little fox beside their own name.

"This one can hold your bag tomorrow," Jo said.

Kit touched the smooth wooden peg. That was one thing they knew now.

They looked around the room. There were blocks, books, and a table with thick crayons. Near the window sat another child, drawing circles on a page.

"That is Amara," Jo said. "She is visiting too."

Kit wanted to say hello, but the words felt small inside their mouth.

Jo did not hurry them. She placed a fresh sheet of paper beside Amara's.

Kit sat down and drew a fox. Amara drew a rabbit next to it.

"They could be friends," Amara said.

Kit nodded. "They could build a house."

Soon there was a house, a garden, and a very large pond that needed three blue crayons.

Before leaving, Kit asked where the bathroom was and where Dad would meet them after school. Jo showed them both places.

The classroom was still new. But it was no longer one big unknown thing. It had a fox hook, a blue star, and someone who liked drawing ponds.

That night, Dad helped Kit put their bag beside the door.

"I might still feel wobbly tomorrow," Kit said.

"You can feel wobbly and ask for help," Dad replied.

Kit climbed into bed. They pictured the fox hook waiting quietly. Tomorrow would come one small step at a time.

For now, there was a pillow, a familiar blanket, and Dad's gentle goodnight.
