A Knight Bedtime Story for 5-Year-Olds
Share a quiet knight story with your child before bed. You can talk gently about how asking for help can be brave.
The Knight and the Squeaky Gate
Every evening, Knight Rowan walked around the castle garden. They checked that the watering cans were put away and the paths were clear for morning.
Rowan's armor was made for festivals, not fighting. Tonight, they wore soft boots and a knitted green scarf.
At the far end of the garden, the little gate made a long squeak.
A young dragon named Fern sat beside it with her paws over her ears.
"I want to visit the moonflowers," she said. "But that sound feels much too big."
Rowan opened the gate very slowly. It squeaked again.
"Perhaps I can lift it," Rowan said.
They tried, carefully, but the gate was heavy. Rowan stopped before their arms grew tired.
"I will need help," they said.
The gardener came with a small tin of oil. She showed Rowan the hinges, where the gate turned.
"These little joints have become dry. We can help them move smoothly."
Rowan held the tin while the gardener added a few drops. Fern watched from a comfortable distance.
Then Rowan moved the gate once, and twice. The squeak became a whisper. Soon there was only the soft click of the latch.
Fern lowered her paws.
"You did not have to push harder," she said.
"No," Rowan agreed. "We needed to understand what was wrong."
They walked together to the moonflowers. White petals were opening in the cool evening air. Fern bent her long neck to smell one without touching it.
The gardener brought a bench cushion, and they all sat quietly for a little while. A moth drifted past like a scrap of pale ribbon.
When Fern was ready to leave, she opened the gate herself. Click. It closed as gently as a small book.
Rowan put away the oil and returned to their room. Their boots rested side by side under the bed.
Outside, the garden gate was still. The moonflowers shone softly. Rowan settled beneath a light blanket, glad that a little care had made the evening easier, and drifted into sleep.
